Final Fantasy 7 Remake - my end-game review.

I must admit that when I got this game for free (courtesy of PSN) last February, I was excited to play it. However, I was expecting more content for the first part of this long-awaited game (at least in par with the Original 1997 game). I know that the first part of the game (Midgar part) is small - less than 20% of the whole game but I was not expecting a game which I could finish in 15 DAYS.

To this day, Remake is the shortest game I had ever finished in Playstation 4. I was hoping that SQUAREnix could have expanded the game a bit with more side-quests like beating up bad guys, monster clearing, Summon battles (which I truly enjoy) and such which could have made the game longer.

To start the review, I like to say that SQUAREnix did a very good job at remaking this old classic. But to be fair to them who worked so hard on it, I do not think we should call it a Remake but a Reimagined story which felt more appropriate.

During the game play, I was able to immerse myself in the game and imagine the city of Midgar, the cold empty hallways of the Mako reactors and the lifeless undercity of Midgar itself, the same way I did when I played the Original back in 1997. In term of recreating the city landscape and its people, SQUAREnix did a very marvelous job at it.

However, I wished that that did not make the Midgar folks so, distance. There should have been more interaction and dialog which could influence the story a bit more, which could draw a clearer picture of what was happening around the City and the World outside.

I took some time to check the list of actors and actresses which SQUAREnix brought in for the Remake project. and I was very impressed (for both the Japanese version as well as the English version).

I just going to list down the main characters (including Red 13 and Sephiroth) here but you can check out the rest and their resume at the link above.

Most of these characters had worked with SQUAREnix (or other production companies) which had made games related to Final Fantasy 7 directly or indirectly. The voiceover for Tifa (Ayumi Ito) for example had been the voice of Tifa in ALL other FF series as well as Kingdom Heart series. This move allowed SQUAREnix to use actors and actresses who are familiar with the characters they are acting for, as well as their background story and their characteristics.

As for the English casts, I'm truly impressed. They even managed to get "Superman" (from the TV series, Supergirl) to play Sephiroth and "Skull Face" from Metal Gear Solid 5 : Phantom Pain (PS4 game) to play President Shin Ra. These are some impressive line-up, people who had been trained and worked in acting for years prior to this project.
